One of Jesus’ disciples, Simon, was a patriot of Israel, and hater of all things Roman. Another disciple, Levi, was a tax collector, meaning he worked for the Roman government. These men were at political extremes from each other, and should have hated each other.
Yet they each became followers of Jesus, and in following him, learned how to love someone they had a very hard time with.
The election is coming quickly. Followers of Jesus will disagree with each other over many issues. But whatever our political persuasion, Jesus calls us to something deeper, higher, more powerful than our political loyalties. And the world desperately needs to see that something like never before.
