We have neighbors who put in a huge garden every year, and bring us some of the produce when they’ve had a really good year. But right now, there are lots of last year’s vines and stalks and other debris that need to be removed before they can plant.
God doesn’t change, His Word doesn’t change, but we do. And because we change, what we need from God will also change. What you needed from God when you were twenty is not exactly the same as what you need from him now.
As followers of Jesus, our lives are like gardens full of old growth that needs clearing away – habits and practices that distract us from knowing God better. Lent is a good time to do such spiritual “clearing away” and preparing of hearts to receive new seed.
