“The Mystery of Christmas”
One reason Sherlock Holmes mysteries have been so popular is that, by the end of the story, the great detective had solved the mystery.
Real life is much messier than a Sherlock Holmes story. So much of life remains frustratingly mysterious.
The Christmas story is so familiar that we don’t often think of it as a mystery. The mystery of Christmas – that almighty God became a helpless baby, born to suffer and die – isn’t the kind of mystery to be solved. It’s a wonder to think about, and in doing so to remind us how much we are loved, and receive what we need to deal with the complications of “real life.”
