During January, Janice (with some help from me) has been putting away the last of the Christmas decorations and putting up the everyday things. The house is much less festive, and the short days seem a little bleaker. And it’s only the beginning of February! It’s one of the reasons we keep the candles in the windows for a while after Christmas.
Although it doesn’t feel like it, sunrise comes a bit earlier, and sunset a little later, each day. Signs of Spring’s return, and of God’s faithfulness, even when it isn’t obvious.
So perhaps it is a fitting reminder that Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall on the same day this year. On the day you do something special for the one you care about, you can “do something special” for the One who faithfully, and perfectly, loves us.
“Giving up something for Lent” is not about scoring points with the Lord. It’s a way to respond to the greatest love offer we’ve ever been given, and to know this love more deeply than before.
